MESA aims to help educationally disadvantaged students prepare for and graduate from a four‑year college or university with a math‑based degree in areas such as engineering, the sciences, computer science, and mathematics. The program focuses specifically on students from those groups who historically have had the lowest levels of attainment in four‑year and graduate level programs. MESA strives to help these students develop academic and leadership skills, increase educational performance, and gain confidence in their ability to compete professionally.
Two studies met BHEF's criteria for program inclusion. The findings were positive, but statistical significance was not reported: Evaluation of the junior mesa program: Report No. 89-30. (1989). Sacramento, CA: California Postsecondary Education Commission.
