The Guardian Scholars program is a national effort, but each host school tailors its efforts to fit the needs of local foster care youth. At San Francisco State University, the program is a collaboration between the Educational Opportunity Program and the School of Social Work. The program provides year-round affordable housing, scholarships, mentoring, counseling services, and job opportunities, among other resources. Eligible youth must have been in foster care, and qualify for admission to San Francisco State University and the Educational Opportunity Program.
Level 1 – The program has publicly available descriptive data, including tracked improvement of former foster youth’s GPAs on campus. The program also provides percentages that show retention, remediation completion, graduation, and employment rates of participants. However, no statistical analyses have been conducted. A formal program evaluation is planned for the near future.
