Program that Works

Summary

Through UTeach, students enrolled in STEM-related degree programs are able to earn their teaching certification, without any added cost or semesters in college, through active university and school district collaboration. UTeach curriculum is rigorous and research-based, integrating themes important to STEM education. Students receive early, continuous, and intensive field experiences with practicing teacher leaders. The program has seen significant impacts on STEM-teacher certification, workforce entrance, and retention.

Undergraduates pursuing degrees in STEM fields.

Goal(s)

To increase the number of qualified, certified STEM teachers.

Program Highlights

  • The flexible design allows students to enter the program at any time in their undergraduate career.
  • The first two certification courses are free as an incentive for new students to join.
  • Students observe classroom teachers for 40 hours and then teach under a mentor’s supervision for 12 weeks.
  • Two years of post-graduation induction support are provided for new teachers.

Evidence of Impact

Level 2 – The percent of certified UTeach graduates who enter teaching immediately is 42 percent higher than the national average, and the average four-year teacher retention rate for UTeach graduates is 17 percent higher than the national average.
