Summary

Reading Apprenticeship provides professional development workshops for teachers and train-the-trainer sessions for middle and high school and community college faculty; includes case-based materials; focuses on engaging students in more reading, helping students gain understanding of their own reading processes, and helping students develop problem-solving strategies, to improve comprehension across disciplines.

Target Population

Middle and high school teachers and literacy coaches and community college faculty.

Goal(s)

To improve the effectiveness of teachers who teach adolescents, and improve the reading proficiency and comprehension of adolescents across disciplines.

Evidence of Impact

One study met standards and showed that, for high implementation schools, students' reading test scores improved significantly after the program.

2001–2004 - Reading Apprenticeship Classroom Study Linking Professional Development for Teachers to Outcomes for Students in Diverse Subject- Area Classrooms: A study conducted by Reading Apprenticeship in the San Francisco Bay areas middle and high schools found that students involved in Reading Apprenticeship showed improved grades and improved scores on standardized tests as compared to their peers.
