Project Creating Independence Through Student-owned Strategies (CRISS)

Program that Works

Summary

Through workshops for practicing teachers that focus on instructional strategies, and through the introduction of various teaching materials CRISS advocates a change in teaching style to help students become independent learners.

Target Population

Educators, home-school parents, and school administrators who teach grades 3-12.

Goal(s)

Provide professional development to educators in order to help students become independent learners.

Program Highlights

  • CRISS is one of only four reading intervention programs whose effectiveness is currently being studied by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Students who become independent learners through the use of CRISS strategies retain information better and improve their reading skills better than students from comparison groups.
  • Project CRISS has been replicated in a variety of subject areas including physical education, fine arts, and technology. The project is currently in place in schools in 12 different states.

Evidence of Impact

Research suggests that participation in Project CRISS helps students retain information and improves reading skills.

Project CRISS: Evidence of Effectiveness 2004: An independent study conducted in two large Utah school districts found elementary, middle, and high school students taught by teachers trained in CRISS techniques showed more improvement in reading assessments compared to other students.

Project CRISS: Evidence of Effectiveness 1995: A study conducted by CRISS staff in Washington and Colorado found that students taught by CRISS-trained teachers perform better on memory tasks compared to other students.

Three evaluations by Project CRISS affiliates.
Project CRISS began in Montana in the 1970s and was designated as both a Montana State Demonstration Site and a model program in the National Diffusion Network in the 1980s. Project CRISS is in 12 states.
