MATH Connections

Program that Works

Summary

By connecting standards-based content in each math subject (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics and discrete mathematics) to the real-world problems addressed by scientists, using mathematics and technology, MATH Connections demonstrates to students that mathematics is a vital, powerful, relevant, and flexible tool for interacting with their world. The three years of the MATH curriculum are built around themes (e.g., Year 1: Data, Numbers, and Patterns) and the curriculum is designed for students at a variety of achievement levels.

Target Population

Students in grades 9-11

Goal(s)

Raise the math knowledge of students at all levels (including average, accelerated)

Program Highlights

Evidence of Impact

Research shows that students who participate in MATH classes score higher on their state standardized tests, the PSATs, and the SATs than students enrolled in traditional math classes.

Finally, A Math Curriculum Everyone Agrees On: A study conducted by the Cichon Group for the developer found that students performed better than their non-participating peers on the state achievement test, the PSAT, and the SAT. Some of the findings were statistically significant.

One study of nine schools, sponsored by the developer.
The curriculum has been mapped to 26 state standards and to the NCTM standards. In 1997, approximately 4,000 students in 18 schools were using the curriculum.
