The IMSEP is a large, multifaceted endeavor to raise STEM capacity and activity in Iowa. The program spans a network of institutions, including universities, K-12 schools, industry, governmental organizations, museums, zoos, and others. Core programs include the Iowa-Teach Math & Science teacher recruitment initiative; Real World Externships for Teachers; Project Lead the Way; and statewide professional development, outreach, and learner enrichment, among others.
Level 2—After program implementation, the number of aspiring math and science teachers across Iowa increased, as compared to previous years. As well, there is evidence of demand for IMSEP programs and activities.
IMSEP Annual Report, 2009-2010. Internally-developed, annual report details Year 2 progress toward the three program goals. In Year 2 of IMSEP, the number of students pursuing science and math teaching in Iowa’s public universities increased by 21 and 39 percent, respectively. Project Lead the Way was adopted by 111 Iowa schools and 387 students were awarded pre-engineering credits through Iowa universities. The Real World Externships program included 33 secondary teachers and 20 business and agency partners. IMSEP activities drew large numbers of educators, potential educators, and businesses. A STEM Education Strategic Plan is under development with many university and business partners.
