Summary

The College Crusade of Rhode Island is a comprehensive college‑readiness and scholarship program for middle school and high school students in low‑income urban school districts. It offers academic programs, advisor services, and career exploration activities for middle and high school students.  High school students pursuing higher education are offered college visits, financial aid information, and scholarships.

Target Population

Middle and high school students in low-income urban neighborhoods in Rhode Island.

Goal(s)

Increase educational and career success among disadvantaged youth.

Program Highlights

  • Participants from the high school class of 2007 graduated high school and attended college at much higher rates than both their peers from urban districts and their peers state and nationwide.
  • The College Crusade of Rhode Island has awarded $18 million in college scholarships to 2,500 students.

19 high schools and 14 middle schools.
Each student receives over $10,000 worth of free programs and services. Over $18 million in college scholarships have been provided since 2001.

Research indicates that College Crusade of Rhode Island students have higher graduation rates and college attendance rates, and may have higher success rates in advanced math courses than their peers.

The College Crusade of Rhode Island: Significant Milestones 1989-2008: A document produced by the developer reports that students in the program graduate high school and enroll in college at higher rates than the national and state averages.

The College Crusade of Rhode Island: Second Annual Report: An annual report card produced by the developer reports that a higher percentage of program students are taking more advanced math courses—and earning good grades in them—in middle school.
